The Midget Mercs were scheduled to play at the 2020 Midget Eastern Zone Championships in Manitouwadge at the end of March. For some of these players, this was going to be the last chance to put on their Mercs jersey and compete for a Zones Championship.

This year the Midget Mercs were made up of players from Marathon, Biigtigong Nishnaabeg, Greenstone and many points in between. This team was made up of players that tried hard to fit a hockey schedule into their busy high school and work schedules. This team had limitations with practices due to their schedules, but when they came together for tournament weekends, they normally came together and made their presence known by the end of the weekend.

During the weekend of February 21-23, the Mercs hosted their annual Midget Tournament. They welcomed the Filane’s Falcons and the Wawa Legionnaires for a double round robin tournament. After going winless in the round robin, the Mercs defeated the Wawa Legionnaires in the 2vs3 semi-final, earning a date with the Filane’s Falcons for the Championship.

The Mercs Cinderella story came to an end, as they were defeated 6-4 in the Championship.

If this was to be the last Mercs game for some of these players, they should be proud of their desire to play and for the determination they showed playing for the Mercs this year.

Congratulations and thank you to all of the players that came together to put this team on the ice this year, as well a big thank to the volunteers that helped to provide the structure for the players to play under.
