The Atom Marathon Mercs were on the road the weekend of January 31 to February 1 for the Annual Nipigon Elks Atom Tournament.

The Mercs opened their weekend on Friday evening with a 5-1 victory over the Manitouwadge Copper Kings.

A busy Saturday saw the Mercs defeat the Co-Host Nipigon Elks – Blue team 7-3 in the morning draw, The Mercs then lost 7-5 to the Superior Stars in the afternoon.  In the evening draw, the Mercs dropped a 4-2 decision to the pesky Filane’s Falcons.

The 2 and 2 record gave the Mercs 4th place after the Round Robin, and a Semi-Final match-up against the undefeated 1st place Superior Stars. The Mercs came out very motivated in their Semi-Final game and made short work of the Stars with a convincing 5-1 win.

In the Championship Final, the Mercs were up against the West End Bruins of Thunder Bay. The Mercs carried their momentum from their Semi Final game and defeated the Bruins 6-3 for the Championship.

The best result from this weekend was how the Mercs dealt with adversity, learned from their mistakes, and came together as a team for a common goal.

Up next for the Mercs is the 2020 HNO Atom Eastern Zone Championship and the end of February in Marathon.
